Founding and Early Years

Eureka Christian Church, located in Mt. Olive, NC, traces its roots back to 1853 when it was established under the Disciples of Christ denomination. Originally known as Pleasant Grove Christian Church, it began with 22 founding members who gathered for worship in the "Lightered Knot Schoolhouse."

Survival and Revival

During the challenging times of the Civil War, the church faced near extinction. However, in 1874, a remarkable revival led by Reverend Henry Donald Harper sparked renewed faith. Over 105 individuals committed their lives to Christ, revitalizing the church.

Growth and Development

The first church building was erected in 1875, marking a significant milestone in the church's growth. Despite hardships during World War II, including dwindling membership to just six individuals, Reverend John Langston's steadfast leadership ensured the church persevered. Through determination and faith, worship continued, leading to a post-war resurgence that saw membership grow to 350.

Missions and Outreach

In 1995, under the guidance of Pastor Frank Purvis, Eureka Christian Church began actively supporting missionaries and outreach efforts. The church's commitment to global ministry was further demonstrated in 2013 with its first mission trip to Haiti, reflecting its dedication to spreading the gospel beyond local borders.

Adapting to Challenges

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 posed new challenges, prompting Pastor Frank Purvis to lead a worship service on Easter Sunday in the church parking lot. The church launched a television program of preaching called, "Carry the Cross". This program aired on WHFL-TV43. Despite the obstacles, the congregation persevered, and regular worship in the sanctuary resumed by May 31, 2020, showcasing the church's resilience and adaptability.
